Site 10 – The Grift

At this location you see a weir with a fish ladder in The Grift. The Grift was constructed in the Middle ages by Bishop David van Bourgondien between Rhenen and Veenendaal. Between 1935-1941 the canal got expanded into what is now know as the ‘Valleikanaal’. Originally, the canal was fed by water from the peat soils of Veenendaal towards the Rhine. However, as the peat was excavated, the elevation difference changed such that the waterflow turned around and now flows from the Rhine towards Veenendaal. The canal drains in the Eemmeer (between Amersfoort and Almere).
